Marina Beach

Situated along the 12 km shoreline of the Chennai city along the Bay of Bengal, India, Marina Beach belongs to the Indian Ocean. The beach does not display any of the characteristics of its western counterparts. Unlike the short rocky formations found in the Juhu Beach in the western coastal region of the India, the basic texture of the Marina Beach is sandy more than anything else. Marina Beach is considered one of the longest beach by the locals. The Beach has extensive regions within it. Marina Beach generally extents from Fort St. George in the north to Besant Nagar in the south, a distance of about 12km.

The set of stone statues that line up the roadside areas of the beach is one of the special feature of the Marina Beach. These statues are that of legends like Mahatma Gandhi, Kannagi, Thiruvalluvar. Memorials for M. G. Ramachandran and C. N. Annadurai, former Chief ministers of Tamil Nadu and Periyar are also present. The evening crowd of the Marina Beach thrives with life. The bustling crowd of the beach is unmissable. The good ambiance, the exquisite beauty and the ecosystem of the region deserve special mention. With the passage of time however, Marina beach had to surrender to the onslaughts of tourism. The growing plastic bags, human waste, and other major pollutants have simply left some parts of the beach absolutely useless. Though efforts have been taken by the voluntary organizations and the government too, much head way could not be done. However changes did take place as a result of the effort. Among the other measures taken up to save the environment of the beach mention may be made of, protection of Olive Ridley turtle nests along the Neelangarai section of the beach. There is a main aquarium on the Marina Beach.

One of the important fact related with the Marina Beach is the ill fated Tsunami which followed a massive earthquake in the year 2004, that caused huge loss to human lives and property.
